Five wins in Spokane – Stanford University Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. Garrett Brown and Alyssa Jones were the Stanford athletes who made the biggest splash in their season debut at the Spokane Invitational indoor track and field meet at The Podium on Saturday.

In Stanford’s first appearance at this meet and on this 200-meter incline, three Cardinals provided additions or improvements to Stanford’s all-time indoor top 10 list.

Brown, a sophomore in her first meet since finishing fourth in the pole vault at the Under-20 World Championships in Cali, Columbia on Aug. 4, led Stanford to a 1-2-3 record. Brown cleared 17-8 (5.40m), which was an indoor personal best and moved him into a tie for third place on Stanford’s all-time indoor record with decathlete Harrison Williams. Teammates Max Manson (17-4 , 5.30 m) and JT ruler (16-6 , 5.05 m) were second and third.

Jones, the nation’s No. 2 high school long jumper in 2022, won his collegiate debut by leaping 20-6 (6.25m). That ranked him No. 2 on Stanford’s all-time freshman list, including indoors and outdoors, and puts him at No. 6 all-time indoors for the Cardinal.

Also, Laurel Wong rose to number 9 on the school’s indoor list, clearing 12-9 (3.90 m) and finished fifth in the invitational pole vault.

Brown and Jones were among five Stanford winners. All American Max McKhann in the 35-pound shot put (68-7, 20.90m) and Sam Liokumovich in the shot put (58-9, 17.32 m) won the men’s.
Team in the women’s 4×400 relay Samantha Thomas, Trinity price, Camille Peisner, Megan Olomu won in 3:46.63. Peisner pulled Stanford into the lead in the third leg and Olomu, a junior in his first 4×400 at Stanford, anchored the Cardinal to victory.

Cheetah Burrell (formerly Chantae Bayne), an alumna who holds the Stanford 60 record, also won the event in 7.45.

Stanford brought 23 sprinters, jumpers and throwers to the meet, which is officially the Cardinal’s second meet of the season and the last until Jan. 13 on the same track in the Cougar Classic and the Jan. 14 Indoor Preview at Washington.

In the pole vault, Brown almost equaled the outdoor season absolute personal record of 17-9 (5.42m). Brown opened with 15-7 (4.75m) and was perfect on his first five heights. With only Manson left in the contest, Brown made it 17-8 on his second attempt as Manson went out. Brown missed one attempt at a lifetime best of 17-10 (5.45m) before moving to 18-0 (5.50m), and she missed twice.
Jones, who jumped from the first four flights because he did not have a college rating, won the competition with his first jump with the best of the day. Any of his first three jumps, including 19-8 (6.00m) and 20-5 (6.24m), would have won the event.
