‘The hypocrisy is confusing. If it had happened in India…’: Sehwag in Gabba Test | Cricket

It took less than two days for the opening Test between Australia and South Africa to end in Brisbane. 34 wickets fell in six overs bowled under 145 overs as Australia won by six wickets. After Sunday’s win, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag blasted Australia at the Gabba pitches, saying that if it had happened in India, the BCCI would have had to destroy Test cricket.

On Day 1, 15 places fell. South Africa were bowled out for just 152 runs in 48.2 overs before Australia were reduced to 145 for five in 33.1 overs. On the second day, Kagiso Rabada’s four-wicket haul restricted Australia to a lead of just 66 runs. But the tourists were folded in one session, managing just 99 runs in 37.4 overs, leaving Australia with just 34 runs to win. Semers still had plenty of help from the field as South Africa’s pacemen picked four more wickets before Australia wrapped up the game in the eighth over.

Taking to Twitter moments after the match, Sehwag praised Cricket Australia for the pitch being prepared for the Gabba Test.

142 rounds and not even 2 days and they have the audacity to lecture about what kind of pitches are needed. Had it happened in India, it would have marked the end of Test cricket, the destruction of Test cricket and what not. The hypocrisy is confusing. #AUSvSA, he had tweeted.

South African skipper Dean Elgar also criticized the pitch, saying it was difficult for the batsmen to form a partnership.

“It was pretty spicy. If you were a bowler, you’d be licking your lips,” he said. “It was challenging for the batsmen, no doubt, which is fine if there’s a good competition between the bat and the ball, but obviously on the flip side I don’t see it as a fair competition.”
