TABLE TENNIS Papua New Guinea is looking for more players as it prepares for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
Head coach Rea Loi said this while hosting the one-day national tournament at Butuka Academy School in Port Moresby on Wednesday.
We are focusing more on the elite open divisions and para events where we can find new talent, he said.
Those who competed in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Oceania Cup are automatically qualified for the team.
He said that a total of six federations participated in the men’s and women’s singles in the open series of the under-12, U15, U18 categories and the best ranking category.
We will organize more practices all the time to prepare for other championships, Loi said.
This is after we have selected a few players from all of these tournaments leading up to the 2023 main event.
For this championship, approximately three para-athletes will be selected to participate in the standing division of the para divisions, while in the elite open divisions we will recruit eight males and females each and then cut the number down through training and trials as we approach the Pacific Games. deadline.
Loi credited PNG Table Tennis Federation president George Shao and the country’s Chinese community for supporting the code, particularly the recent ITTF Oceania Championships.
He said a list has been submitted to the PNG Olympic Committee to approve Team PNG’s final squad ahead of next year’s Games in Honiara.
