Mizzou Football Live Game Thread: Gasparilla Bowl vs Wake Forest

Notes for the first quarter

• Mizzou opened the Gasparilla Bowl with three plays, but Barrett Banister recorded a catch on his return.
• Wake Forest and Sam Hartman start off on the right foot, finding AT Pratt with two receptions.
• A pass interference call on KAD negates Mizzou’s third down, and Wake Forest scores on the next play when Taylor Morin catches Sam Hartman’s five-yard touchdown pass. That pass was a record breaker for Hartman as he moved into the ACC’s all-time lead in passing touchdowns.
• Brady Cook and Luther Burden III combine for two passes and show a glimpse of the future with multiple double-digit receptions. Mookie Cooper and Demario’s Peanut Houston have also appeared on the stat sheet at this position.
• Harrison Mevis capped a 13-play Mizzou drive with a 35-yard field goal to give the Tigers their first points of the night.
• Mizzou’s offense is clicking well in the passing game, as Cook has eight carries for 78 yards. However, in the running game, the Tigers have gone back six yards. It’s time to see if Mizzou’s defense can bounce back.
• Johnny Walker and KAD stuff Justice Ellison on 3rd & 1, helping the defense respond after getting a touchdown on Wake Forests opening drive. Wake Forest punts and the Tigers start at the 30-yard line.
• At the end of the first quarter, the teams are nearly identical in terms of yards, first downs and plays. The Demon Deacons are averaging over 12 yards per carry.

Second quarter notes

• Cook is sacked on third down after finding no open field, and Wake Forest begins its first drive of the second quarter at its own 37 yards.
• Mizzou right guard Connor Wood was wheeled into the locker room and has since returned to the sideline with his boots on. His place on the field was taken by Mitchell Walters.
• Justice Ellison’s 1-yard touchdown run extends Wake Forest’s lead. Hartman completed 12 carries for 27 yards to start the drive before handing it off to the sophomore running back to end the drive.
• A pair of Tigers, center Connor Tollison and wide receiver Tauskie Dove, are both on the ground after a Brady Cook incompletion. Drake Heismeyer is now in the middle of the game.
• Mizzou calls its first timeout before 3rd-and-16, and the Tigers look for a crucial conversion despite having both a center and right guard.
• The next play goes incomplete to Banister, forcing Mizzou to punt again with Sean Koetting. A 38-yard punt catches Wake Forest at its own 14-yard line.
• The Tigers defense made another stand at a time when it seemed necessary. However, Burden’s hitting error gives the ball back to Wake Forest. The invitation has been confirmed, and this will be a play that will be circulated throughout the evening.
• Mizzou calls its second timeout before Wake Forest’s third down, and the Demon Deacons have a chance to add to the damage later.
• After jumpers from both sides, especially for the Tigers, Sam Hartman throws an interception to Jaylon Carlies. The Tigers defense earns a valuable turnover.
• Luther Burden went to the locker room with an apparent injury, probably from a beating he took after a fumble.
• Brady Cook and Cody Schrader finally got the Mizzou running game going, combining for 52 yards on two carries. Cook then works his athleticism out of the pocket after a high snap and throws a one-yard touchdown to Peanut Houston.
• Darius Robinson takes a roughing the passer penalty, and then Chad Bailey trades words with teammate Ennis Rakestraw Jr. The penalty again nullified the third stop.
• Per Brandon Kiley, Mizzou is now without Luther Burden, Tauskie Dove, two offensive line starters, three defensive ends and a starting safety due to injuries and early decisions to prepare for the NFL Draft. Tyrone Hopper is also out.
• Mizzou, with no timeouts remaining, receives the ball before the half ends at their own nine-yard line. The Tigers had a pair of third downs, but ultimately failed to score.
• Per Kenny Van Doren, Chad Bailey and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. got into another brawl as they entered the halftime locker room at halftime. Players and coaches dished it out, but it wasn’t the look Tigers fans expected from the two players who have announced they will return.
• Mizzou won the yardage battle in the first half, including in every phase of the game. Perhaps the biggest weakness for the Tigers has been their six penalties for 50 yards.

Notes for the third quarter

• Wake Forest starts at their own 25 yard line and Hartman finds Perry on 3rd and 1 to continue the drive. Perry is up to eight receptions for 86 yards after his 32-yard gain was overturned on replay.
• Realus George Jr., who announced his intention to return next season earlier this week, drops Ellison for a one-yard loss on third down to force a punt. Brady Cook takes over at the Mizzous 17-yard line.
• Despite the QB spy, Cook continues to burn demon deacons with his legs. He runs for 47 yards on six carries, then capitalizes on a roughing call on a passer to push Mizzou into Wake Forest territory.
• Cody Schrader on a 14-yard 3rd-and-17 before Cook earns a first down on another effective line, avoiding a sack in the process.
• Burden is back in the game!
• Mizzou takes its first timeout as the game clock approaches zero with one second and a goal.
• Add punter Sean Koetting to the growing list of Tigers walking from the medical tent.
• Cody Schrader plunged into the end zone for four yards to give Mizzou the lead.
• Sam Hartman avoids sacks and finds Jahmal Banks on a 48-yard pass. However, a missed extra point leaves it a three-point game. Wake Forest hadn’t missed an extra point since 2017, a streak of 269 straight.
• Banister almost pulls off a first down, but the Tigers are forced to punt instead. It’s the Wake Forest ball at their own 25 yards.
• Chad Bailey and Josh Landry sack Hartman and an uninspired 19-yard punt gives Mizzou the ball at the Wake Forest 4-yard line.
• Mizzou is unable to capitalize on best field position as Cook throws Mekhi Miller on third down and Miller’s pass is knocked out of his hands by an incompletion. Wake Forest takes over at their own 43 yards.
• A holding penalty on Wake Forest eliminates a fourth down conversion and forces the Demon Deacons to punt early in the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter Notes

• Mizzou starts again at their own 19-yard line. Cook fired down the sideline to Burden on fourth down, but the pass fell short. Interesting selection of games there.
• Daylan Carnell blocks a wide-open third-down conversion that follows a holding penalty that wiped out the first down, and Wake Forest punts again. The Tigers start at their own 15 yards.
• It’s either a fumble return for a touchdown to Wake Forest or an incomplete pass to Cook. A monumental call to the crew hereThe call is incomplete.
• Wake Forest starts at their own 25 yards after the Demon Deacons stopped the Mizzou offense with a sack and tackle by Tyler Williams on third down by Cooks.
• The Demon Deacons convert on third down when Hartman finds Perry for his 11th reception. Hartman follows with his first rush of the night, a 15-yard gain.
• Mizzou calls its second timeout of the half, seemingly pointing to the importance of this upcoming 2nd and 8 for Wake Forest.
• Taylor Morin strikes again as Hartman hits a receiver on a 16-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field.
• That final drive has been the epitome of Mizzous’ offensive line struggles all season, with Cook being dropped for losses of 11 and 12 yards. To the delight of Tigers fans, Burden got one last touch on offense, but was sacked at the nine-yard line.
• Sam Hartman has been named the 2022 Gasparilla Bowl MVP.
• Mizzou finishes the 2022 season at 6-7, marking one more season under .500, while Wake Forest finished 8-6.
