Footage has emerged of Lionel Messi’s car as Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain was overwhelmed by adoring fans and his family tried to attend his niece’s 15th birthday party in Rosario.
Messi has been with his family in Rosario since he inspired Argentina to a third World Cup, and for the first time in 36 years.
The 35-year-old scored twice in a 3-3 draw against France before converting a penalty as Argentina won.4-2 on penalties against the defending champions.
Messi returned to Rosario after being forced to evacuate his team’s winners’ parade over security concerns.
Argentina’s success has led to the Paris Saint-Germain star being regularly mobbed by fans in his car last week as he returned home with his wife Antonella Roccuzzo.
It was informed that Messi “may avoid public appearances” during Christmas.
Similar scenes greeted Messi and his family as they attempted to attend his niece’s birthday, with fans seen surrounding his car as he arrived at the venue.
Messi had to stop the car and looked uncomfortable before waving to the crowd.
Fans have reacted sympathetically on social media, with some branding the attention “appalling”.
‘I sympathize with celebrities! I will never have that kind of patience. This kind of attention would make me sick every single day,” one fan tweeted, while another said: “Lovely being a lion, can’t even go to my niece’s birthday in peace”.
“Seriously asking this: can he live in Argentina after this,” another fan tweeted in response to Messi’s ongoing adulation in Argentina.
“So sad they don’t have a normal life. They deserve it at least sometimes,” was another response after the family car was stopped.
A video of Messi dancing at the venue after finally entering the venue was posted on social media.
Messi had sent a message to his supporters after receiving an “Illustrious Citizen” plaque from Funes mayor Roly Santacroce for his World Cup exploits.
The star thanked fans for their support and apologized for not being so visible in public.
“Well, we wanted to send greetings to all the people of Funes, Rosario in general,” he said.
– We want to thank you for the love you have always shown us, especially now that I have just returned from the World Cup.
“Sorry for us too because sometimes it’s hard to see everyone, we’re with family and friends for a few days and sometimes it’s complicated.”
Messi will leave Argentina on January 1 when he travels back to France to rejoin the PSG squad.
