The 54th round of the Molade Okoya-Thomas Table Tennis Championships failed on Tuesday due to a town hall meeting organized by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, at the tournament venue.

Daily Trust discovered that the hall meant to host the matches of the much anticipated table tennis tournament was attended by executive members of Surulere 1, Coker Aguda and Itire Ikare Community Development Association (CDA).

A banner inside the hall indicated that the gathering was a town hall meeting hosted by the Speaker and that it started from 10am to 3pm.

Meanwhile, younger table tennis players eager for action were seen knocking each other out while waiting for the political event to end.

At the end of the town hall meeting, the official said the referees held a meeting and unanimously decided it was too late to start the contest.

For this reason, it was decided that the tournament should start today at the same place.

The referees met and decided that the race should start in full by 8am tomorrow (today) morning, the referee said.

He said that yesterday would have seen all the men’s singles matches, but he said that the organizers would now rush to finish the matches in the allotted time.

We were supposed to start with the men’s singles today (yesterday) but now we have to hurry to reach the announced time, he stated.
