Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal is in for another very tough match when he takes on Alex de Minaur on Monday night at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.

Nadal’s clash with De Minaur will be Spain’s first tie against Australia, with both countries coming off defeat in their first United Cup series.

The world number 2 survived a shock loss to Britain’s Cameron Norrie in his first match of the season on Australian soil. He was eliminated in three sets after winning the first.

But Nadal is not taking his Aussie opponent lightly as he tries to find form ahead of the big summer.

He (De Minaur) is a great player, Nadal said.

Play super fast. Play at a very high intensity. Taking the ball very early. Improved supply.

It will be another tough match where I will have to play very well to have a chance. So let’s see.

As for De Minaur, he too will be looking for his first win at the United Cup after losing his opening match to Norrie 6-3, 6-3.

And to do that, Hell must beat an opponent he hasn’t been able to beat in three tries.

It’s a great opportunity, De Minaur said.

I have two great matches. Norrie and Nadal. It’s a great test for me.

I’m excited to get out there. It will be great to play at home.

The two first met at Wimbledon in 2018, with Nadal winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Although the Spaniard would win their next two meetings, the last time they played toe-to-toe was in January 2020.

De Minaurs’ battle with Nadal will be followed by fellow Aussie Maddison Inglis against Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
