How did the Hoosiers who entered the portal after 2021 fare? —Daily Hoosier

Through both inbound and outbound activity, the transfer portal played a large part in shaping Indiana football’s 2022 roster.

Here’s a look at how 2021 outgoing transfers fared after entering the portal.

QB Michael Penix Jr.

Penix raised eyebrows across the country playing in Washington this season under former IU offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer. Penix led the nation with 357 passing yards per game, threw 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions and led the Huskies to 11 wins and the Alamo Bowl. He finished in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting.

RB Tim Baldwin Jr.

Baldwin played in four games at UMass this season before redshirting for the rest of the season. Through the first four weeks, he rushed for 165 yards on 33 carries with one fumble.

RB Sampson James

James transferred to Purdue before the 2021 season, but he was not allowed to play right away. He then entered the transfer portal in the summer before the 2022 season and has yet to find a new school.

RB Davion Ervin-Poindexter

The former IU football player landed at Western Kentucky and played in all 14 of the Hilltoppers’ games this season, including their matchup with Indiana at Memorial Stadium in September. Ervin-Poindexter rushed for 525 yards on 116 carries with three touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 84 yards.

RB Chris Childers

Another former walk-on, Childers moved to FCS San Diego in his redshirt year. In eight games, he had 389 rushing yards on 94 carries with two touchdowns and 10 receptions for 104 yards.

WR Jacolby Hewitt

Hewitt landed at Florida International, but didn’t play a big role this year. He caught four passes for 52 yards in eight games and entered the transfer window after the season.

WR Miles Marshall

Marshall transferred to Miami (OH) and played in all 13 games for the RedHawks. He had 390 yards on 24 receptions with two touchdowns.

WR Camron Buckley

Buckley went to Jackson State to play Deion Sanders. He played in eight games and caught 12 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.

WR Da’Shaun Brown

At that time, Brown had not yet found a home on the transfer portal prisoner April in Bloomington.

TE Kham Taylor

Taylor transferred to Alabama A&M and only saw the field in one game this senior season.

TE Matt Bjorson

Bjorson went to Miami (OH) along with Marshall and played in 10 games this year. He caught just one pass for 20 yards and did not appear in the RedHawks’ Bahamas Bowl loss to UAB.

OL Brady Feeney

The sophomore transferred to FCS school Colgate and appeared in all 11 games for the Raiders.

DL Gavin McCabe

McCabe fell into the group of players who entered the transfer portal and did not find a new team.

DT Shamar Jones

Jones arrived at the FCS school in Chattanooga with two years of eligibility remaining. He played in eight games for the Mocs and recorded seven total tackles and an interception.

DE Jonathan King

King transferred to Alabama A&M and appeared in four games. He assisted on one tackle.

LB James Miller

Miller rejoined former IU defensive coordinator Kane Wommack at South Alabama and started at middle linebacker for the Jaguars. He recorded 68 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks, along with two QB hurries and three pass breakups. He played in all 13 games for the USA, including the New Orleans Bowl against Western Kentucky.

LB DK Bonhomme

Bonhomme went with Miller to South Alabama and met Wommack. But unlike Miller, Bonhomme didn’t play very much this season. In three games, he recorded a total of six tackles.

LB Cam Williams

Williams did not make it to the transfer portal with another team.

LB Ty Wise

Wise transferred to Miami (OH) with three years of eligibility remaining. In eight games this season, he recorded 24 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, with one forced fumble, three QB hurries and one pass break-up.

CB Larry Tracy III

Tracy played in three games this year for Illinois State. He had two tackles, 0.5 for a loss, against Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium in early September.

CB Reese Taylor

The former Mr. Football stayed north of Indiana at Purdue. He played in every game this season for the Boilermakers and recorded 33 tackles, including one for a loss and one sack.

DB Maurice Freeman

Freeman transferred to Liberty. He played in 11 games for the Flames this season, including the Boca Raton Bowl loss to Toledo.

S John Burgess

Burgess was another player who couldn’t find a spot on another roster when he entered the portal.
