With six minutes left in the first quarter, Hamlin overturned a 13-yard catch by Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Higgins crashed into Hamlin at full speed and appeared to hit him in the head and chest. Hamlin quickly stood up, took two steps, collapsed backwards, his body limp.

Medical staff administered CPR and treated him for 10 minutes as players from both teams were visibly distraught, some shedding tears on the sidelines while others circled together and knelt in prayer. One medical professional appeared to be giving an IV. He was later placed on a stretcher and transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Fans at the Paycor Stadium, who had remained silent through the ordeal, applaud as the ambulance leaves. A Bills spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hamlin, a second-year player drafted out of Pittsburgh, had been in the starting lineup since September due to injuries that plagued Buffalo’s secondary.

Earlier in the first quarter, Bills cornerback Taron Johnson left the game with a head injury while trying to tackle Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst. Johnson was treated by the team’s trainers on the field for several minutes before he left.
