The 2023 Shanghai Amateur Games, which begin this month, will feature more than 6,000 online and offline sports competitions and activities. The city’s sports authority invites sports clubs, organizations, companies and other social entities to help organize the games.
The goal of the annual Amateur Games, which started in 2017, is to promote sports in everyday life, increase training and strengthen Shanghai’s status as an international sports metropolis.

The amateur games include leagues, competitive series, sports carnivals and other activities and will continue until November. Some concern the Yangtze River Delta.
Traditional ball games such as football, basketball, table tennis, badminton and tennis are played in league games, as well as rugby, skating, taekwondo and tai chi. Chinese chess is introduced as a new sport.
This year, 28 city-level and 16 district-level competitions will be organized. Shanghai Archery Open, Shanghai Workers’ Dragon Boat Race, Shanghai Cycling Carnival, Shanghai Development Zone Sports Meet and Shanghai Citizen’s Climbing Competition are five new city-level events for 2023.

Amateur games include both traditional ball games and sports such as ice hockey and curling.
In addition to the district-level sports authorities, sports clubs, companies and other social groups are encouraged to become event organizers. They receive funding from the city government as well as event organization and promotion assistance from the sports authority.
The 2022 Shanghai Amateur Games will host 6,320 events and activities throughout the year. Of these, 4,162 were offline, attracting 3.62 million participants.
