Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 16. Florida State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team (0-1) opened the 2023 season with a 7-0 loss to No. 16 Florida State (0-1) on Friday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.

Hawaii’s number one duo in doubles Andre Ilagan fended off Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Charuvinci and Barnaby Smith by break 6-4. But UH’s No. 3 pair Kilian Maitre and Andy Hernandez fell to the Seminoles’ Andreja Petrovic and Loris Pourroy. Game #2 was won by default by FSU.

Florida State took control of the match in singles. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead to capture the match with three straight wins on courts Nos. 5, 6 and 3. Play No. 2, UH’s Axel Labrunie fought hard and almost forced a third set, but falls in a third set tie 6-2, 7-6 (5). UH’s No. 4 Hernandez gave Joshua Dous-Karpensch all he could handle. He won the first set, but eventually lost the third set via super tie-breaking, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4). UH’s 41st place Andre Ilaganwas locked in a battle with 12th-placed Antoine Cornut-Charuvinci. Ilagan won the first set to take a 5-4 lead in the second, but Cornut-Charuvinc rallied to win the next three games to steal set 2. Cornut-Charuvinc then picked up the momentum to hold against Ilagan in a super tie, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6 ).

The Rainbow Warriors have two days off before hosting the Hawai’i Invitational on Monday. Starting January 9th at 10am HT. Well. 12 Duke and California join Hawaii for a one-day, three-team tournament at the UH Tennis Complex.
