Women’s tennis concluded the Weinman Foundation Invitational

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team wrapped up the 2023 Weinman Foundation Invitational on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex. Although the Rainbow Wahine came up short, some players fought hard to earn a pair of singles wins and three singles wins.

In the doubles game, the Hawaiian duo Alexis Merrill and Rita Pinto picked up her second doubles win of the season, defeating California’s Erin Richardson and Berta Passola 6-3. The UH team Anna Kern and Madison Kim also picked up their second win of the tournament as they downed Cal’s Cami Brown and Makenna Thiel 6-3.

Hawaii Kaitlyn Ralarpicked up her first singles win of the year by quickly dispatching Washington State’s Tiffany Phout in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Merrill recorded her second straight singles win, knocking off Cal’s Cami Brown 6-3, 6-3. UH’s Kim also earned her second straight singles win by holding off California’s Erin Richardson. Kim recovered from dropping the first set to take the second to level the match at 1-1 in sets. Kim led 5-2 in the third set, but Richardson came back to tie the score at 5-5. Kim regrouped and won the next two games to seal a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

The Rainbow Wahine next play their first dual match of the season against East Tennessee on Thursday, January 12 at the UH Tennis Complex.
