Jessica Pegula has tenaciously defeated Martina Trevisan 6-4, 6-2 in the opening match of the United Cup final.

The win gives the USA a 1-0 lead against the Italian team

Martina Trevisan fought hard to get back into the match and won two straight games to get the break back. However, Pegula’s chance to pass was too great.

Although the result looks very straightforward, both players did it the absolute hardest way in this match – trading multiple breaks in both sets.

In his post-match speech, Pegula said he felt re-invigorated after getting the first tie out of the way.

“Martina is playing great – she’s a fighter, she competes, I feel like she thrives in the atmosphere with the fans and the team and it’s really hard to beat someone like that,” he said.

“Every time I felt like I was getting up, I just made a couple of loose plays, but credit to him, he had some good shots and clutch moments as well, and he didn’t give up and was able to work. back to first and second.

The tie will soon resume as Francis Tiafoe and Lorenzo Musetti battle it out in the men’s singles.
