Team India will begin their journey to the upcoming 2023 ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup with a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting in Guwahati with the first ODI on Tuesday (January 9). India’s Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who skipped the three-match T20I series, which India won 2-1 on Saturday, will return to the game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to focus on ODI cricket this year keeping the upcoming World Cup in mind. However, the home team received a big blow even before the series could get going, when Jasprit Bumrahs return to the game was delayed again. Bumrah, who has been ruled out since September 2022 due to a back injury, was expected to return to the ODI series as announced by the BCCI, but it can now be confirmed that the Mumbai Indian pacers will not participate in the ODI series.

India are also worried about the form of skipper Rohit Sharma, who himself is making a comeback from injury after breaking his finger in the second ODI against Bangladesh last month. The hosts enjoy a huge historical advantage over the Dasun Shanaka-led team, having won against them 93 times in 162 ODIs so far. So far, the visitors have beaten India 57 times.

Rohit Sharma will look to continue India’s winning streak at home and bounce back from the 1-2 ODI series defeat suffered in Bangladesh last month. The first ODI gets underway in Guwahati on Tuesday (January 10).
