Jon Rahm believes he is currently “the best player in the world” after a red-hot streak of three tournament wins in five starts, and has questioned the method used to calculate the golf rankings, where he remains ranked No.5 in the world.
The former US Open champion won the Sentry Tournament of Champions held in Hawaii over the weekend. He made a comeback for the ages as he overturned Collin Morikawa’s seven-shot lead in the final round.
Having also won the Spanish Open and DP World Tour titles, former No. 1 Rahm was hoping to at least move past Patrick Cantlay into fourth place, but still finds himself tied for fifth.
“Since the playoffs … I’ve won three times and I can’t even get close to him. So I’m trying to understand what’s going on,” Rahm said.
– If they hadn’t changed the world ranking points [system] I would have been pretty close [to world No 1] right now. But in my mind I feel that since August I have been the best player in the world.
“Earlier in the year, obviously Scottie (Scheffler) was that player, then Rory (McIlroy) was that player, and I feel like right now it’s been me. Anyone, any year can have a hot three, four months and get there. present.”
Rahm’s win at the Tournament of Champions was his third in his last five tournaments
Last year, Rahm described the revamped world ranking system as a “laughter” as it prioritized the depth of the field rather than the ranks of the players involved.
McIlroy remains at the top of the list, followed by Masters champion Scheffler, Open winner Cameron Smith and Cantlay.
Rahm still walked away pocketing $2.7 million from a $15 million purse in Hawaii.
