Bangladesh registered their first ever win over Australia in any ICC tournament on the back of an inspired run chase as the Tigers gave an early indication of their championship with a shock but convincing win.

Tournament favorites Australia recovered from two early setbacks to post a competitive total of 130/5 after winning the toss of Benoni. Ella Hayward (35/39) and Claire Moore (52/51) steadied the ship with a 76-run partnership after Disha Biswas (2/25) had removed both keys cheaply.

In reply, Bangladesh took the fight to the opposition with strong top performances from Dilara Akter (40/42) and Afia Prottasha (24/22). Although Chloe Ainsworth (2/9) brought Australia back into the game, Sumaiya Akter (41/27) ensured her side crossed the line with seven wickets in hand as Bangladesh reached their target with 13 balls to spare.

Bangladesh had entered the tournament in good form after strong performances in the warm-up matches. But this landmark and deserved win over Australia is an early indication that the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup is wide open.

Clear win for UAE over Scotland

In the Group D encounter against the United Arab Emirates, Scotland went nowhere after being sent into bat.

The Scots lost points at regular intervals and ended up dispatching 99/9 from their 20 overs. Indhuja Nandakumar (2/20), Vaishnave Mahesh (2/19) and Samaira Dharnidharka (2/22) were the pick of the bowlers, with Emma Walsingham (37/33) comfortably top scorer for Scotland.

The UAE looked to have lost their way after a watchful start to the chase as three wickets fell in three overs to leave them at 45/3 approaching the midway point of the second innings.

But Samaira Dharnidharka (23 off 27) and the impressive Mahika Gaur (33* off 25) stepped up in the shifts after that flurry of strikes, with Gaur still in the middle as the UAE reached their target with just under four overs to go.
