Men’s hockey tied Colby 3-3

MIDDLETOWN, CT.- The Wesleyan men’s hockey team played to a tie against NESCAC school Colby on Saturday afternoon at the Spurrier-Snyder Rink. The Cardinals trailed 3-1 midway through the third before a five-minute long penalty gave Wesleyan the opportunity they needed. They scored twice during that game on foul play to tie the score at three. Both teams had several chances to end the period also in overtime, but neither was able to come up with a winner and the game ended three-three. Wesleyan is now 8-2-2 (5-1-2 NESCAC), while Colby is 7-6-1 (5-3-1 NESCAC).

The Cardinals went on an immediate power play to open the game thanks to a foul call with 25 seconds left. Wesleyan managed a handful of shots during the shootout, including one from the barrel, but Colby’s penalty kill escaped unscathed. The next five minutes saw only one shot on goal. The Mules then went on offense as Jack Sullivan found Carter Breitenfeldt for the first score of the game. Each team had a power play opportunity to end the period, but they couldn’t come through and the game went to Level 2^n.d period 1-0 to Colby.

The Mules kept their momentum going in the second period with another early goal. Breitenfeldt scored again, finishing off a Ryan Doolin find. Wesleyan had two power plays in the next few minutes of the period, but was again turned over by a Mules penalty. Wesleyan managed to sneak one in just before the end of the period to cut the deficit in half. Jake Lachance ’23 and Danny Judge ’26 set Jack Marotto ’26 for his first goal as a Cardinal.

Colby opened the 3rd^rd period on the offensive end again producing seven shots to Wesleyan’s one through seven minutes. Their persistence finally paid off with goal number three. Henry Molson stole the puck in the neutral zone and took it into the Wesleyan zone, where he fed Michael McEachern for a one-timer from the right front. With eight minutes left, it looked like the Mules were going to close this one out, but a game foul call for a hit from behind gave the Cardinals a golden opportunity. During their five-minute power play, Wesleyan was able to tie the score at three. The first goal came in the opening two minutes when Lachance followed on a save by the Mules goaltender, Andy Beran and the Cardinals were within one. Wesleyan immediately returned to the kickoff and worked the puck back into the Mule zone. Liam Donelan ’23 drifted to his right before ripping a wrist shot that beat Beran to tie the score at three.

In overtime, Colby immediately had a chance to end the game. They earned a power play and had a handful of shots on goal in a two-minute span, including two off the post by Jack Sullivan, but Wesleyan went three-for-four through two minutes. Wesleyan then had a power play opportunity of its own for the final minute and a half of overtime. With seconds left in the game, Ethan Davidson The ’26 worked his way up the middle of the ice and let one go that rang off the post before being cleared to end the game.

Lachance had a goal and an assist, his second straight game with at least one goal and one assist. He now leads the team with 17 points, which is currently tied for 1st^St in NESCAC. Marottolo scored his first goal as a Cardinal. Six different Cardinals had an assist. Wesleyan is one of two teams in all of Division II hockey to go undefeated. Wesleyan outshot Colby 29-24.

Wesleyan ends a three-game homestand on Tuesday, January 17th^th in a non-conference battle against Southern New Hampshire University.
