Sri Lankan cricketers Jeffrey Vandersay and Ashen Bandara were both stretchered off after an ugly collision in the ODI against India on Sunday.

India won the toss and elected to bat in Thiruvananthapuram and were on their way to a strong total when the incident occurred during the 42nd over.

Virat Kohli pulled one to the boundary at deep square leg and both Vandersay and Bandara ran after it and the teammates then opted to slide to stop the ball.

But it saw them collide heavily while sliding and it looked like the whiplash did the most damage, especially to Vandersay.

Both men were lying down for several minutes, and both had to be carried off the field.

The incident was reminiscent of the collision between Jason Gillespie and Steve Waughs against Sri Lanka in the first Test in 1999, in which Waugh’s nose was broken and Gillespie’s leg was broken.

Fortunately, the immediate injuries did not appear to be as bad for Vandersay and Bandara, although both were being evaluated for concussions.

Play resumed seven minutes later, with Kohli reaching his century.

He finished with a massive 166, leading India to a total of 5-390.
