Women’s tennis starts the spring season with a 5-2 win at Penn State

State College, Pa. The Old Dominion women’s tennis team opened its spring 2023 schedule Sunday morning with a 5-2 win at Penn State.

“Great way to start the season, we had some early game nerves but we got over them,” said the ODU head coach. Dominic Manilla. “We have some things to clean up, but overall everyone contributed to the win today against a good Penn State team and it’s very satisfying.”

In doubles, the Monarchs took the team point by winning two out of three matches. Two in one singles game Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Sophia Johnson beat Sofiya Chekhylstova and Olivia Dorner 6-0. The point grabbed the second place as Aleksandra Viktorovitch and Allison Isaacs beat Carla Gibrau and Ioana Gheorgita 6-4.

In singles play, ODU (1-0) picked up wins from the two, three, four and six spots in the lineup. Johnson started at two spots and won 6-3, 6-2 over Yvonne Zuffova to take a 2-0 lead. Shahar Biran beat Gibrau in third place 6-4, 6-1 and leads 3-0. Alesya Yakubovich won the double in four points by beating Gheorgita 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and holding a 4-0 advantage. Allison Isaacs got the fifth point with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 over Alexandria Nelson.

Old Dominion plays its home game Saturday at noon, hosting Columbia at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
