Men’s tennis drops to No. 14 Wake Forest in season opener

Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC The Elon University men’s tennis team opened the spring season by winning doubles match point against No. 14 Wake Forest, but the Phoenix ended up losing 6-1.

“It was great to get the spring season started,” the head coach Michael Leonard said. “I thought we played very well in doubles. Wake Forest responded and played well in singles.”

HIGHLIGHTS

• Elon won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. This is the first time Phoenix has won a doubleheader against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since January 12, 2019 against Duke. Elon was undefeated in the last seven dual meet sessions against ACC teams.
• The pair plays in the first place Daniel Martin and Oskar Antinheimo ran a double to lead off. After Wake Forest’s team of Filippo Moroni and Juan Lopez got one of the breaks back, Martin and Antinheimo broke again and won the match 6-2.
• Making his Phoenix debut, Ahmed Hosni in pairs Nicholas Campbell wins 6-4 at No. 2 to reach double point for Phoenix.
• Nicholas Condos won Elon’s first singles set of the season, winning the second frame 6-4 against Wake Forest’s Luciano Tacchi.

NEXT

Elon will travel to Texas for a road game against Rice on the 27th. January and against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the 28th. January.
