CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women’s tennis team opened the 2023 spring campaign on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Valparaiso to open the season 1-0.
“It was a solid first game for us and a great way to start the spring season,” head coach Frank Polito said. “We played very well in doubles today and carried that momentum into singles where we competed hard in the lineup. Now we need to get a quick recovery before we get back on the court for a tough match against Toledo tomorrow.”
The Vikings started strong, picking up wins on all three doubles courts to claim the first point of the match. At No. 1 doubles, Bethany Yauch and Sima Heren won 6-1, while Selma Tounsi/Filippa Frogner and Tereze Vevere/Ella Franz posted similar 6-2 wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
In singles, Cleveland State picked up points at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6.
Vevere and Franz won straight sets at No. 3 singles on Saturday, with Vevere winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Franz earning a 6-4, 7-6(3) win at No. 6. Saturday’s win against Valparaiso marked Franz’s first collegiate dual match victory.
Yauch added another point for the Vikings at No. 2 with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win, while Heren won 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
The Vikings continue their opening weekend tomorrow (Sunday, January 22nd) traveling to Toledo for a 1pm contest.
