Legendary Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy has urged the national selectors to start with Steve Smith in white-ball cricket. He has scored 328 runs for the Big Bash League (BBL) Sydney Sixers in four innings, including 36, 101, 125 not out and 66.
Healy believes it will be difficult to ignore the Smiths’ performances as an opener, especially with David Warner and Aaron Finch struggling.
Finch retired from one-day internationals last year. Healy also compared Smith to Don Bradman, saying it was a privilege to watch him bat.
Asked if he would like to see Smith open in the shortest format, Healy said, why not?
Warner and Finch are not playing well and Smith is in exceptional form. So he’s ahead of them in my eyes,” Healy told Sportsday NSW on Wednesday.
He added that the selectors should open up with Smith in T20Is and ODIs.
Healy announced that Smith has sound technology.
It’s a privilege to see him bat. The difference between him and the others is huge. It’s very Don Bradman-like. He makes hitting look very easy. When he plays a shot, his feet are still and his head is still, he said.
He finds the middle of the bat, which was not the case six months ago.
