The veteran won bronze in the table tennis tournament in Oman

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A 78-year-old veteran, Ratlam resident Indresh Chandra Purohit, who currently resides in Indore, won the bronze medal in doubles at the Oman Veteran Table Tennis Championship 2023 on January 21. He and his partner defeated France’s Versang and Jacques. The 75-80 year old category wins a medal.

Purohit is a retired locomotive pilot of Rajdhani Express who retired in 2005 and served in Iraq as a locomotive pilot from 1988 to 1990.

He claims that this is the first time that a veteran player has won a medal for India in an international table tennis championship. He further added that in 1975 Deputy Minister of Railways Buta Singh traveled in the train he was driving and awarded him Rs.50.

Past achievements

Purohit started his journey from school itself and he played Nationals in Imphal, Manipur in 1962.

In 2012, he reached the quarterfinals in a tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2016, he played in the singles and doubles finals in Alicante, Spain. In 2018, he won gold in the 70-year-old age group in singles, doubles and team events at the South Asian Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Penang, Malaysia. In addition to this, he has won the Finnish championship seven times.
