Columbia Track & Field Hosted the Dr. Sanders Columbia Challenge at the Armory this weekend

NEW YORK Columbia Track & Field returns to the historic armory this weekend as the Lions host the Dr. Sanders Columbia Challenge. The first competition starts on Friday at 11 a.m. and the competition continues on Saturday at 9 a.m.

FIELD

This year, the field participating in the Columbia challenge is very competitive and includes schools from all over the country. This includes:Albany, Brown, UConn, Cornell, Hampton, Iona, La Salle, Manhattan, Maryland, Rowan, Saint Augustine’s, Saint Peter’s, St. John’s, St. Joseph’s, Stony Brook, Syracuse, UCLA, South Carolina and Ursinus.

THE LAST TIME

Last weekend the Lions competed in two events with great success in both.

First, the Lions sent a group of student-athletes to compete in the Gotham Cup last Friday, and they did not disappoint.

Michael Danziwas the story of Columbia’s meet on the men’s side, taking first in the 1,000 meters in 2:23. At the same time, on the women’s sideVictoria Pattersonwas the story that won the 1-mile run in 4:47.66. The Lions finished fourth, fifth and ninth in the competition.

Columbia also had a successful day in the Columbia-Yale-Dartmouth tri-match last Saturday afternoon. Both the Lions’ men and women finished second, just behind Dartmouth in the standings. However, many individuals had impressive performances despite not coming out on top.

On the men’s sideChris Balthazarwas the first to win the individual event in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.018.Haydn Brotschthen won the 400m in 23.111.Nate Gramentinewon the high jump with a jump of 2.04 meters. The Lions also won both the 4x400m and 4x800m relay.

On the women’s sideRachel Marshwas the first to win the event and placed first in the 200m with a time of 25.724.Anna Jordahl-Henrywon the high jump with a jump of 1.7 meters.

Columbia will look to build on those performances and carry the momentum into this weekend’s home meet.

NEXT: The Lions will compete in the Met Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. in Staten Island.
