Australian cricket star Will Pucovski returns from an indefinite hiatus

Will Pucovski’s roller-coaster cricket career begins its next round as he returns to play for his class club in Melbourne.

Australia’s opener has been named for the two-day Victoria Premier Cricket match against Essendon at the Albert Ground starting on Saturday.

This will be his first game at any level since taking an indefinite break on October 27th.

The 24-year-old’s stop-start career has been plagued by a series of concussions and other injuries.

Pucovski had just returned earlier this season after suffering the 11th concussion of his short career.

His return initially came as part of the Cricket Academy’s tour of India in August, before he scored a big century for Victoria’s second XI in September.

The right-hander scored 0, nine and 37 in two Sheffield Shield games for Victoria.

Widely regarded as one of the country’s top emerging cricketing talents, Pucovski has played one Test – against India in January 2021.

He initially went on personal leave in October 2018 after declaring himself a rising star a week earlier with a double century against WA for Victoria.

The young prodigy was due to be named in the Australian squad for the start of the 2019-20 summer before pulling out of the competition.

She has since worked closely with mental coach Emma Murray and has repeatedly stated that the fire still burns in her to fuel her only appearance in Australia.

“You’re going to fail a lot in cricket, it happens,” Pucovski said in an interview about working with Murray in 2019.

“But if I’m consistent in how I do it, I give myself the best chance to succeed.

‘It’s probably just freed me up a bit. I’m not going to base my failure or success on a personal level solely on my score, but on how I went.

Injuries haven’t helped his cause.

His international debut was expected to come in late 2020 against India, but Pucovski suffered a nasty concussion in a warm-up match at Drummoyne Oval.

When he finally made his international bow later that summer, he injured his shoulder diving and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Victoria’s next Shield match is against Queensland at the MCG on February 9.
