Former Michigan football legend Tyrone Wheatley has found a new home coaching the game he loves.
On Thursday morning, Wayne State University announced the hiring of Wheatley as the schools 20th head coach in program history.
The former Wolverine linebacker is coaching the Denver Broncos’ running backs this season in the NFL. He returned to the NFL after a three-year stint as the head coach at Morgan State, where he went 5-18.
Throughout the interview process, (interim athletic director Erika) Ms. Wallace showed that Wayne State was well prepared and very detailed in what they wanted for the football program and the direction of the athletic department, Wheatley said in a released statement. This really got me excited about the job. I’m looking forward to coming home, as they always say, there’s no place like home. No matter where I’ve been, I’ve always tried to recruit the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit. I am happy, honored and blessed to return home and coach at Wayne State University.
Wheatley has had coaching experience with Ohio Northern, Eastern Michigan, Syracuse, Buffalo Bills, Michigan (two years) and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Wheatley, now 51, starred at Michigan from 1991-1994. He was a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and the 1992 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.
Wheatley had a 10-year NFL career after becoming a first-round pick of the New York Giants in 1995. He played four years with the Giants and six years with the Oakland Raiders.
