CHATTANOOGA, TENN. Gardner-Webb playoff season opener at Chattanooga Saturday afternoon, 4-3. The teams split six singles matches, but the Mocs won the opening point of doubles to take the home win.
The head coach Mike Griffith said, “They were better than us in singles and that was the difference. We have to be better with our team.”
In doubles, the Mocs won on courts 2 and 3 to win the doubles point. The top series match was left unfinished when the two were 5-5 Victor Putter and Numa Lemieux Monette.
In singles, Chattanooga got multiple straight decisions on courts 3, 5 and then 4 to seal the team victory. Kim Maidhammer won his debut on the court 6, 6-2, 6-2. Eduardo Diaz won the #1 spot with a final score of 7-6(5), 6-2. The last match was Alex Lepine a win after losing the first set on court #2. His final score was 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
“We have a tough game tomorrow at Kennesaw, who finished last year, and we’re all looking forward to tomorrow,” Griffith said.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs will face Kennesaw State on Sunday, Jan. 29 for the first bid at 11:00 a.m. as they wrap up their opening weekend of road games.
