HARRISONBURG, Va. Despite the junior’s huge singles win Carly Cohen, the University of Richmond Women’s Tennis team dropped a hard-fought game against JMU on Sunday afternoon on the road, 6-1. The Spiders fell to 0-5 on the young season, while JMU improved to 2-1 on the year.
In single player Leonor Oliveira forced a deciding third set when she fell 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2 to Kylie Moulin (JMU). Andrew Campodonico also took her singles match to three with a close 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 loss to Daniela Voloh (JMU). Cohen beat Daria Afanasjeva (JMU) 6-4. 6-4 for the dominant singles victory for the Spiders.
In doubles, Cohen/Oliveira fell to Moulin/Oliveira (JMU), 6-3, while Martha Buendia/Campodonico fell to Munteanu/Voloh(JMU), 6-3 and Lara Bakhaya/Elizabeth Novak battled but eventually fell 6-4 to Afanasjeva/Matko (JMU).
The Spiders will look to bounce back at Radford on Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va., before facing Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. on Feb. 4 on the road. The Spiders open 2023 with a home opener against Norfolk State on the 9th. February at 2 p.m. at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
