No. 18 women’s tennis falls in opening weekend consolation match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Well. 18 The UCLA women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to FIU on Sunday in an ITA Kickoff Weekend consolation match to cap off their time at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Open Catanzarite won the singles match for the Bruins (1-2). The Panthers (2-1) narrowly took a singles point before winning in straight sets from Ekaterina Khairutdinova, Salma Loudil and Katerina Mandelikova to clinch the overall.

Loudili and Mandelikova recorded their first win of the day on the third doubles court, where they won Vanessa Ong and Sasha Vagramov. Catansaritis and Fangran Tian faced 1-4 losses against Yasmine Kabbaj and Oyinlomo Quadre, but took the final five games and won 6-4 to tie UCLA. However, the starting point was ultimately left to the money laundering investigation center, as Khairutdinova and Kamila Umarova lasted longer than 11th place. Kimmy Hance and Elise Wagle 7-5 for the decision.

Well. 42 Catanzarite momentarily evened the score with his latest win against a nationally ranked opponent on Court 3. A day after beating 80th-ranked Anna Supapitch Kuearum of Iowa State, Catanzarite defeated No. 106 Umarova 6-3, 6-1.

The Court 2 match was the next to finish, when Khairutdinova beat 46. Hance 6-3, 6-0. Louidili followed on court 6 and beat Vagramov 6-3, 6-1. The fourth point then came on Court 5, where Mandelikova survived with a 6-2, 6-3 result against Ong.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, February 3 when they visit the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex to take on Saint Mary’s. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 PM PT.
