A&M Falls to No. 18 Stanford in ITA Kickoff Weekend Finals – Texas A&M Athletics

PALO ALTO, California The Texas A&M men’s tennis team lost a hard-fought battle against No. 18 Stanford (4-1) on Monday at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

A&M is looking to knock off another ranked opponent, the No. 33 pair Noah Schachter/Trey Hilderbrand broke the Aggies quickly and beat Stanford’s Arthur Fery/Filip Kolasinski on Court 1 (6-1). The Cardinal stormed back to win on a field 3, but A&M JC Roddick/Julius Perego responded by closing Court 2, beating Samir Banerjee/Max Basing (6-2) to secure the doubles point for the Maroon & White.

A&M looked to extend its lead into singles, but Stanford applied the pressure and was able to close things out quickly. Schachter and Guido Marson picked up first-set wins to keep the Aggies in the match. Schachter was locked in a fierce battle with Arthur Fery on court 1. The pair traded sets early and Schachter led 3-1 in the third set when the match was suspended. Guido Marson had gained the upper hand against Neel Rajesh in the third set after two back-and-forth rounds in the opening set. Marson also led 3-0 at the end of the third set.

“Today was a good match against a really good team. I felt like we had a lot of momentum early in winning the singles point and then we started well in a lot of the singles matches. When we didn’t close those early sets, we let them back in the match and they were so talented that they took advantage of that and shut us out even though we had a couple of games on the pitch where we were in good positions.”

The Aggies are back on the road, this time in Columbus, Ohio, where they will face No. 2 Ohio State at 5:00 PM on February 3rd at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
