Bangladesh head coach – Chandika Hathurusingha joins the senior men’s squad in place of Russell Domingo

ESPNcricinfo understands that discussions on the roadmap between Sriram and BCB in Dhaka earlier this month did not yield clear answers. But the board had said in December last year that it wants Sriram as the long-term T20I head coach. If this is true, Hathurusingha might only be linked with the Test and ODI side.

“It is an honor to get this opportunity to coach the Bangladesh national team once again,” Hathurusingha said in a statement. “I really liked the warmth of the people and the culture of Bangladesh. I look forward to working with the players again and enjoying their successes.”

This is 54-year-old Hathurusingha’s second stint in Bangladesh after serving as the head coach between 2014 and 2017. That included Bangladesh’s famous ODI series winning streak at home, which included beating Pakistan, India and South Africa in consecutive months. Under Hathurusingha’s leadership, the team also qualified for the play-offs at ICC events in the ODI World Cup in 2015 and the Champions Trophy in 2017, and also registered their maiden Test wins against England, Australia and Sri Lanka.

BCB: Hathurusingha ‘proven tactician’

“Chandika’s experience and knowledge of Bangladesh cricket will be an asset for him and will benefit the players,” BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said. “He is a proven tactician and we have seen his impact on the national team during his first stint.”

After his time in Bangladesh, Hathurusingha returned to his home country of Sri Lanka and took over as head coach of the men’s national team before moving to New South Wales in July 2020.
