David Warner fears for the future of Test cricket

I think guys right now in the short term are looking at all the leagues and stuff. The best way to get value for your currency is to make a name for yourself. There are only a small minority of people who have really been able to do it and have long careers.

If you want to play cricket in Australia, you can get there just by putting the numbers on the board. Through the Big Bash, if you think that’s your way and you don’t want to play red-ball cricket, you probably won’t get that value in terms of currency in other franchise leagues.

For Warner, an accomplished three-form player, this year will be a test of his stamina, with an Ashes away series and a 50-over World Cup on the horizon.

For now, he is focusing on what is widely recognized as the toughest task in world cricket, winning a Test series in India.

As soon as we get there, turn on the power, Warner said. For us, it’s about trying to relax and turn the mind off and not think about what’s coming. If you think too far ahead, it can be very exhausting. You’ll kill yourself before you get there.

Australia will begin preparations in Bengaluru before moving to Nagpur on February 6, three days after the first Test. They have not arranged a tour match, a decision Warner supported.

We think tour games are a myth, Warner said. We have been to different countries time and time again, and there is no real preparation. It’s about going out there and getting practice points to practice with.

Two tests in Galle [against Sri Lanka last year] probably helped us prepare. Even if they were extreme and we don’t see such conditions, it still gives you a good chance for this series.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc says he is on track to play the second Test in New Delhi after injuring his finger in the Boxing Day Test.

I still have a week and a half left in the splint, Starc said. I’ve been able to train and increase my workload and everything. I probably bowl at almost full training intensity when I can with a spatula. I’m on my way to another exam. I will have a scan in about a week and then get on a plane.
