The Maryland Mens Golf Team will open in the 2023 Big Ten Match Play Championship

PALM COAST, Fla – The Maryland men’s golf team returns to the fairways for the first tournament of the spring 2023 season and the fifth tournament of the 2022-23 campaign this week at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, co-hosted by the Big Ten Conference with conference foe Indiana.

During the two-day tournament (Feb. 3-4), the Terrapins will play the par-72, 6,981-yard Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort, designed by 18-time champion Jack Nicklaus.

The 15th annual edition of the match play tournament consists of a single-elimination series using Golfstat’s final rankings from November 15, 2022. The game starts at 8:00 a.m. on both days. Each team match consists of six individual matches.

The group is led by a parent Will Koras Lutherville, Md, Sr Will Celiberti From Ridgewood, NJ, freshman Ronnie Kim of Olney, Md., Sr Dillon Brown Halifax, Mass. Freshman Armand Papaziani of Mougins, France and Constantine Mons Hamburg, Germany completes the Terps lineup.

Well. 9 seed Maryland has a bye during the morning session and will take on No. 1 seed Northwestern in the afternoon.

“We’re focused on Northwestern right now. They’re No. 1 right now — overall,” the head coach said. John Phillips. “We’re just focused on Friday afternoon. Koras, Celibert and Brown all have experience on the Ocean Course, so that will help us as we prepare for the Wildcats.”

On Saturday, the morning session will feature the championship semifinals and consolation semifinals, while Saturday afternoon will conclude with the championship, third, fifth, and seventh place matches.

Nine of the conference’s 14 teams are in the tournament: No. 1 Northwestern, No. 2 Michigan State, defending champion No. 3 Indiana, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 6 Rutgers, No. 7 Penn State, No. 8 Michigan and No. 9 Maryland.

Last season, the Terrapins finished with a 1-2 overall record in the Match Play Championship with a lone win over Nebraska and Dillon Brown won two of his three matches.
