CHARLOTTE, NC Gardner-Webb dropped its 2023 season opener Friday in women’s tennis, falling 7-0 in Charlotte.
The Niners (5-3) won the singles point to take a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles and a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.
Emma Watkins won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles for Charlotte, followed by wins at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-0) and No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-1) to lead the team to victory.
Gardner-Webb Manon Delsolplayed at No. 1 singles, fought back in the second set to hang tight in the final match of the day, but fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to Ruxi Schech.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Converse (SC) University at 2:00 PM in Boiling Springs.
