WIPL: Former Australian cricketer Rachael Haynes appointed as head coach of Gujarat Giants

Adani Sportsline-owned Gujarat Giants, who have taken legendary Indian cricketer Mithali Raj as their mentor and advisor, have locked in their picks for the coaching staff ahead of the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League. Along with the exemplary cricketer Mithali, the giants have found some of the most prominent names in the world of cricket. Former Australian cricketer Rachael Haynes is the team’s head coach, the team’s bowling coach is former Indian spinner Nooshin Al Khadeer, with batting coach all-rounder Tushar Arothe and team fielding coach Gavan Twining.

Former Indian women’s national cricket team captain and Gujarat Giants mentor Mithali Raj says, The likes of Rachael Haynes, Nooshi Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe and Gavan Twining will definitely boost the team’s performance. Not only have they carved a niche for themselves in their roles, but their stories of resilience are an inspiration to the team. Their combined strengths will enable Adani Sportslines Gujarat Giants to put up their best performance on the field in the inaugural Women’s Premier League, inspiring several aspiring female sportspersons, adds Mithali.

Having played at the highest level for over a decade, Rachael has won six world championships with the Australian team and served as the team’s vice-captain from 2017-2022. The left-handed batter, who was an integral part of the highly successful national line-up, is a veteran of 84 T20Is and played a crucial role in the Australian teams’ title campaigns in the T20 World Cup 2018 and 2020. Rachael, who was part of the team that won the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup in New -in Zealand, has also featured for the Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League, often leading the run-scoring charts for his side.

The Women’s Premier League is such an exciting addition to the world of cricket. Nooshin, who made her India debut when Mithali was already an integral part of the Indian women’s cricket team, is currently the coach of India’s U-19 women’s team, which recently won the ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa. The former India off-break bowler, who scored 100 in ODIs, was last year the head coach of the Supernovas team that won the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge. Meanwhile, Tushar Arothe is well known in Indian cricket circles and has been the coach of the Indian Womens team. Under Arothe’s leadership, the Indian women’s team advanced to the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017. Arothe, who has significant coaching experience in the domestic genre of cricket, had also led the women’s team to the final of the 2018 Women’s Twenty20 competition. The Asia Cup will be held in Malaysia.
