WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University women’s basketball team used a new-look lineup to take on Augustana University on Friday, Feb. 3 and nearly pulled off an upset, thanks in part to strong performances from Mattie Schimenzandi and Lauren Fech. eventually falls to the Vikings, 79-71.
Augustana University entered McCown Gymnasium looking for its 20th win of the year and 13-3 in the NSIC. Winona State looked to snap a five-game losing streak against the Vikings and move up in the NSIC South standings.
In the first quarter, WSU trailed 9-2 until Vanessa Alexander and Lauren Fech scored back-to-back goals to pull the Warriors into the contest 9-7. Fech and Alex Dornfeld both scored at the end of the opening period with ten minutes left to pull Winona State within four at 19-15 at the end of the opening period.
In the second ten minutes, Schimenzworked to pull WSU within one point at 19-18 with a three-point play after he was fouled on the drive. Paige Peaslee, making her first career start for the Warriors, then connected on a jumper to give the Warriors their first lead of the game at 23-21. After a 10-point visitors’ run, head coach Ana Wurtz saw her team pull to within two on a free throw by Schimenz late before Augustana’s Michaela Jewett hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to send the Vikings to the locker room. 38-33 lead.
After the break, WSU saw an early free throw by Shea Dechantconnect and a pair of baskets by Schimenzscore, while Augustana struggled to regain its scoring. Dechant and Schimenzad combined for six more points in the third quarter for the Warriors, and the home team continued to lead the Vikings until Vikings Aby Phipps’ successful free throws extended Augustana’s margin to 56-52. at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth frame, Augustana was able to pull away from Jewett’s early 3-pointer and convert several free throws to hold off the Warrior’s upset bid. Augustana scored the final seven points of the contest from the foul line to pull off a 79-71 loss at Winona State.
As a team, Winona State was 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor and 7-of-26 (26.9%) from beyond the arc.
WSU was 8-of-13 (61.5%) at the foul line, while the Vikings were 11-of-13 (84.6%) on free throws. Augustana dominated in rebounds 36-31, while the Warrior bench outscored the Viking reserves 17-12.
Winona State was led in scoring by Mattie Schimenz with a season-high 24 points and Lauren Fech added 18 on the night. Fech also led WSU in rebounds with eight, while both Fech and Schimenz had four assists.
Michela Jewett paced the Vikings with 24 points, while teammate Aislinn Duffy added 20 points. Duffy also grabbed seven rebounds for Augustana. The visitors shot 28/69 (40.6%) in the contest.
With the loss, Winona State falls to 10-13 overall and 4-13 in the NSIC. The Warriors return to action on Saturday, February 4th when they host Wayne State College. The Warriors and Wildcats tip off at 5:30 p.m. at McCown Gymnasium, home of the WNB Financial Court.
