Men’s hockey: Cadets on leash, three goals, third

NORTHFIELD, Vt. After a three-goal third period, the Norwich University men’s hockey team earned its third straight win in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play with a 3-1 victory over Southern Maine on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.

The Cadets held the upper hand for the first 40 minutes, despite the Huskies taking a 1-0 lead to Norwich’s 22-15 shot advantage. The Cadets finally broke through on their third power play with a goal Bryan O’Mara (Syracuse, NY) who turned home a Joe Nagle (Weymouth, Mass.) point shot.

Norwich broke the tie 2:16 later as a sophomore Alex Lewis (Moncton, New Brunswick) pokes home a loose puck for a net-mouth scramble generated by a Holden Doggett (Oakville, On.) a shot that Southern Maine goalie Kyle Penton struggled to suppress. For good measure, Paul Schmidt (Linz, Austria) scored into an empty net in the final minute to cap the Cadet victory.

“It was a tough win and I’m proud of our guys that hung in there,” said head coach Cam Ellsworth. “We killed a big penalty at the beginning of the season to get some momentum going and that got us through.

The eighth-ranked Cadets will look to keep their momentum going as they host the 15th^th ranked as Babson’s Senior Day at 4:00 PM on February 4th.
