Buffs Earn Weekend Sweep – University of Colorado Athletics

Corvallis, Ore. The Colorado women’s basketball team beat Oregon State 67-48 in an all-around dominating performance, marking CU’s second ever victory over the Beavers in Corvallis.

The last time the Buffaloes won in Corvallis was in the 2012-13 season. Before Sunday, Colorado had a difficult history with OSU, losing 11 straight games from 2015-16 to 2021-22, but CU has now won two straight against the Beavers.

The Buffaloes were able to jump out to a huge lead early and held off a comeback attempt throughout the game.

“Oregon State has been down in games,” the head coach JR Payne said. “Even Friday night they were down 18 in the third quarter and came back and went to overtime. We talked about this team is never down and out, so you have to keep your foot on the gas as far as playing fast, playing hard and not letting them get going. “

Heading into this weekend’s road sweep, Colorado remains the No. 3 seed in the conference (18-5, 9-3 Pac-12) when it travels back to Boulder for home games against Washington State on Friday at 7 p.m. Washington on Sunday at noon.

Jaylyn Sherrodled Colorado at both ends of the floor Sunday, scoring a total of 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. He also recorded a game-high seven assists and made his defense known with seven steals.

“This was a big win for us,” Sherrod said. “I take everything personally. Losses, wins, what can I do better. I think last week just really gave me as a leader of the team to say you can never take a break. I just wanted to come and fire up the team because I know that my best attribute on this team is my energy.”

Quay MillerandFrida Formanthere were also great performances for the Buffs. Miller recorded another double-double with 15 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Colorado outshot Oregon State 46-26 in what appeared to be the difference in Corvallis. Formann recorded 13 points and seven rebounds, four of which were offensive boards.

“We were incredible on the glass tonight, especially early,” Payne noted. “I thought there were back-to-back possessions where we had one or two offensive boards, and that’s always really important for us.”

Oregon State (11-12, 3-9 Pac-12) has now lost four straight against conference opponents. The Beavers shot 32.7 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from three-point range. Despite both teams committing 13 turnovers, OSU was unable to capitalize in transition scoring just six points while Colorado scored 20 points. OSU’s leading scorer Talia von Oelhoffen was ineffective as she went 0-for-8 shooting.

“It’s huge,” Payne said. “I always say we just want to win, we want to win every game. We believe we can do it. But to do it on the road, everybody knows it’s hard to win on the road for a lot of reasons. To do it on Friday was amazing, so unbelievable. We were so excited and then emotionally reset. Oregon State runs a thousand fast hitters and they run so many things. Our staff decided we’d show them [Colorado] the main things we think we see, but we can’t feed them everything. Our team just locked in and said we’re going to defend and we’re going to guard you, and we did a great job of that.”

How did it happen

The Buffaloes trailed a total of 17 seconds after the game’s first bucket. After that, it was all Colorado in the first quarter as they dominated offensively and defensively.

At the end of the first quarter, CU led 21-6 after 14 points off seven OSU turnovers.

Colorado scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 28-6 lead. The 22-point lead was the Buffs’ largest lead in a conference game this season.

Colorado’s goals cooled down a bit. After back-to-back 3-pointers in the first quarter, the Buffaloes shot 3-9 from the field. The Beavers answered CU’s run with eight unanswered points of their own.

Both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter as the Buffs held a 15-point lead, 35-20, at halftime.

Aaronette Vonleh played the entire third quarter at Colorado, scoring six points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field and two rebounds. Sherrod helped keep CU ahead by five points in the quarter. The fourth-ranked Buffaloes increased their lead to 18, 51-33.

The fourth quarter was much of the same as Colorado’s defense continued to shut down. Formann hit his third 3 of the game to give the Buffs another 20 point lead at 56-36. Miller got his offense going in the fourth quarter, recording seven points as CU beat OSU 67-48.

The key moment

After the first quarter 2-0, the Buffaloes went on a 16-0 scoring drive, ignited by back-to-back-to-back 3 made by Formann and Miller. Colorado’s defense held Oregon State to zero points over six and a half minutes during the scoring. CU never trailed late in the game.

The road sweep is the first for the Oregon schools since the 2012-13 season.
