Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, whose on-field collapse sent shockwaves throughout the sport, will play pro football again, a doctor close to the player said Wednesday.

Dr. Thom Mayer, the medical director of the NFL Players Association, told SiriusXM’s Heart to Heart that he has no doubt Hamlin will tape his snaps and return to the gridiron.

I don’t want to get into HIPAA issues, but I guarantee that Damar Hamlin will play professional football again, Mayer said on the show.

A representative for Hamlin could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday, and Hamlin has not publicly spoken about returning to the field since he went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated on the field last month.

Hamlin and the Bills were playing in Cincinnati on Monday Night Football on Jan. 2 when he appeared to make a routine tackle.

Hamlin may have experienced commotio cordis, a rare phenomenon in which blunt force to the chest can cause a healthy heart to stop within a narrow window of the cardiac cycle.

Hamlin was released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on January 9 for treatment closer to home at Buffalo General Medical Center before being discharged from the hospital on January 11.

He participated in the Bills’ final game of the season, a Jan. 22 playoff loss to the Bengals.

On Wednesday, he accepted the award in Phoenix, which is Sunday’s Super Bowl game, in recognition of his service to his community.

One of my favorite quotes: It’s a blessing to be a blessing, Hamlin said while accepting the NFLPA’s Alan Page Community Award alongside his parents. Having said that, I will never take this position for granted and I will always have an urgent approach to change the community I come from and also communities around the world.

Hamlin had a toy drive fundraiser that people poured into after his on-field collapse. Chasing Ms has since raised over $9 million.
