Ivy Round-Robins awaits men’s and women’s fencing

ITHACA, NY – The University of Pennsylvania men’s (16-8) and women’s (19-8) fencing teams will travel to Cornell University this weekend for the 2023 Ivy League Round-Robins.

On the women’s side, the Quakers are the fourth seed in the Round-Robins (Princeton #1, Columbia #2, Harvard #3). Each weapon group has at least 17 wins in 27 games, led by the Epeists, who enter the weekend at 19-8. The saber team heads to Ithaca for the 18-9 season, and the foil team comes in from 5-10 p.m.

Nine fencers have won at least 25 matches and 57 percent of their matches this season, with three of them winning more than 40 matches with the same percentage.

epic Jessica Liang has won 48 matches, bringing his career win total to 153, while blade-mate Chloe Daniel is right behind him with 44, bringing his career wins to 148.

Foil Talia Becker Calazans has competed in only 31 matches this season, but won 25 of them Katina Proestakis Ortiz He also has 25 wins (in just 39 games), which already surpasses his 21 wins last season. The men are also the fourth seed heading into the Round-Robins weekend (Columbia #1, Harvard #2, Princeton #3). The Foilists have won 12 of their last 14 games, making the season 18-6. Sabrists arrive at the weekend from 16:00 to 08:00 and epeists from 12:00 to 12:00.

epic Avery Townsend has made a significant impact in his freshman season, posting a team-high 43 wins. Fellow freshman Simon Kushkov has won 40 matches for sabreists and foil duo Blake’s brochure and Eric Yu has won 55 matches.

The Quakers have faced both Columbia and Yale this season and have narrowly fallen to both.

What’s in store
The Quaker men compete in a total of four matches, while the Quaker women compete in six (Cornell and Brown only field women’s teams). Team results determine the winner of the Ivy League title, but individual performances determine All-Ivy honors. The top three finishers in each weapon are named first-team All-Ivy, while those finishing 4th through 6th are named second-team All-Ivy.
