With the opening pair of Usman Khawaja and David Warner scoring seven runs, the Australians lost five wickets for 45 runs in a horrific collapse.
Khawaja (5) was the first to depart as he edged a Ravi Ashwin delivery to Virat Kohli.
Marnus Labuschagne, shy of a half-century in the first innings, put on a 19-run partnership with Warner before Ravindra Jadeja was trapped LBW.
The dismissal was clear as day, and although Labuschagne looked tempted for a moment to review the decision, he ultimately decided to walk on the 17th.

Several balls after he was sent packing, Labuschagne was seen on air still with his gloves and helmet under his arm as he watched the action over Alex Careys shoulder, clearly frustrated with the way he left.
Warner then got a lifeline when Kohli dropped him considerably, but he couldn’t capitalize and mustered just 10 runs as Ashwin was caught LBW.
Barely later, Matt Renshaw was out for 2 when he was also caught LBW to Ashwin, as was Peter Handscomb (6) after just 12 balls.
India’s star spinner then secured his fifth point with no rewards for guessing the method when Alex Carey was sent back to the pavilion for 10 runs from six balls.

Commentator Ravi Shastri was blunt in his assessment of Australia’s top half in terms of spin.
The peak orders were just unloaded by the spinners, Shastri said.
Definitely no answer for spinners.

He also had no luck with the spin as skipper Pat Cummins (1) winged a Jadeja delivery to wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat, while debutant Todd Murphy (2) beat the ball from Axar Patel into the grateful hands of Rohit Sharma.
Pacer Mohamed Shami then went to work as he sent Nathan Lyons (8) leg-stump flying to end the spinners’ 20-ball stand.
Shami ended the innings when he was caught LBW by Scott Boland (0) to end the Aussie’s agony.
The reaction to the visitors’ collapse was not kind.
