Women’s Tennis Rolls Columbia advances to ECAC Championship

HANOVER, NH – Seventh-ranked Brown women’s tennis continued to roll on Saturday with a 4-1 win over sixth-ranked Columbia in the ECAC semifinals to advance to the championship game on Sunday.

The Bears improve to 5-1, while the Lions fall to 2-4.

The second and third doubles got their work done for the first point of the match. Junior Nora Lee and a freshman Vivian Miller won 6-3 when the freshman Phoebe Peus and sophomore Hofflander posted a 6-2 decision.

“We started off really strong in singles and set the tone for the final match,” the head coach said Lucie Schmidhauser. “Lindsey and Phoebe did so well on row three, with Nora and Vivian taking the doubles point with an excellent execution of aggressive doubles play.”

Senior Britany Sat (6-3, 6-1), Peus (6-3, 6-4) and junior Ali Benedict (6-4, 6-1) took convincing victories for a final score of 4-1.

“In singles, Britany played strong with absolutely no fear and gave us a 2-0 lead early in the match. Phoebe competed very clearly and finished her singles match with aggressive full court play. Ali grabbed the match in the second with a gritty and tactically astute performance, relentlessly coming to the net and putting pressure on her opponent. Columbia is a team , who always competes very hard, and it was a pleasure to see our team rise to the challenge of being in charge of their own court and executing their game plan. It was a real team effort and I’m excited to see how we battle tomorrow.”

Brown will face top-seeded Princeton in the ECAC championships Sunday at 2 p.m. The Tigers earned their way to the finals with wins over No. 8 Dartmouth (4-3) and No. 4 Harvard (4-0).
