Miami women’s tennis wins top 20 match against Cal 5-2

Well. 11 The Miami Hurricanes defeated the 20th-ranked California Bears 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center for their fourth win of the season.

Hurricanes (4-1) started afternoon strong, introducing new doubles formations and securing the first four points of the match. Junior Audrey Boch-Collins and freshman Mia Mack swept the Bears (2-2) on court 3 with a 6-1 win.

The other two doubles were closer. However, the 17th–ranked fifth-year senior duo Andefire Achong and redshirt sophomore Alexa Noel beat Jessica in 12th Alsola and Katja Wiersholm, 6-4, on Court 1, giving Miami colon and a 1-0 lead. Junior Isabella Pfennig and fourth-year junior Maya Tahan lost 6-5 on Court 2 when the game was suspended.

The momentum shifted to solo play, where the opening sets were split evenly between the teams but Miami close the bears quickly and take the next one three points. Boch-Collins won Erin Richardson 6-4, 6-0, and soon after, Noel collected the second point a Victory 6-3, 6-1y. Tahan secured Miami’s fourth point with a 6-3, 6-4 win pass Fox.

The rest of the matches were played, and Achong dropped his singles match to Wiersholm 6-2, 6-2. The Hurricanes and Bears split the last two games, which both had 10-point tiebreakers. Mack and Hannah Birds Moeller battled to the end, but Mack pulled off a comeback victory, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9), to seal the win for Miami. However, almost simultaneously, Pfennig dropped to 21st Alsola 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 1-0 (10-4).

The Hurricanes eventually defeated Cal, 5-2, and head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews reached the 400-win milestone in 22 years in Coral Gables. After the match phe credited his achievements to all players who fire through the program and representsed Miami on the field Over the years.

“Honestly, 400 is a number I can’t even wrap my head around, but the kids have been working. The players have put in the work… and that’s their number. That’s not my number” Yaroshuk Tews said.

The Miami Hurricanes have a couple of weeks off, but they’re looking to pick up the pace from Saturday’s win with them as they begin ACC play Feb. 24 against Boston College.
