Nebraska Overpowers Knights, 4-1 – University of Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb. The Nebraska men’s tennis team (4-2, 0-0 Big Ten) picked up a big 4-1 win over UCF (1-5, American Athletic) to end a three-game homestand Sunday afternoon at Sid and Hazel. Dillon Tennis Center.

Both teams opened the game with three intense foursomes. The Huskers dropped the first doubles match on Court 1 as UCF’s No. 48 Bogdan Pavel and Lleyton Cronje won Nic Wiedenhorn and Shunya Maruyama, 6-3. The Huskers tied it on Court 3 Roni Hietaranta and Lars Johann won by Luca Hotze and Liam Branger, 6-3.

Then Big Red clicks the singles point on Court 2, ace William Gleason and Calvin Mueller beat Luca Hotze and Liam Branger 6-3.

The intensity continued in singles as the Huskers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as Gleason beat Benchakroun 6-1, 6-1 on Court 4 and Wiedenhorn beat Hotze 6-4, 6-1 on Court 6. The Knights cut Nebraska’s lead in two on Court 2: s, when Pavel beat Maruyama 6-1, 7-5.

The remaining three matches all went to the third set, with Johann picking up the fourth point to earn the Huskers’ fourth win of the season on Court 3 with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

The other two matches were abandoned as number 109 Hietaranta (Court 1) led 6-4, 3-6, 3-2 and Mueller (Court 5) held a 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 advantage.

The Huskers next travel to Tulsa, Okla. on Friday, February 17th to take on the Golden Hurricane’s.
