Women’s tennis knocks off Princeton to win ECAC title

HANOVER, NH – Coming in at No. 7 in the ECAC, the Brown women’s tennis team defied the odds to defeat top-ranked Princeton 4-1 to claim the tournament title Sunday afternoon at the Boss Tennis Center.

The Bears won the championship with wins over No. 2 Penn (4-0), No. 6 Columbia (4-1) and No. 1 Princeton.

Freshman Vivian Miller and junior Nora Lee won a thriller in second doubles and took the match in a tightly contested semi-final (7⁹-6⁷). Freshman Phoebe Peus and a sophomore Lindsey Hofflander took the third double (6-3) from the first point of the match.

The freshman duo of Miller (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) and Peus (6-4, 6-4) won second and third singles, while another student Addison Ahlstrom won his match at fifth singles (6-3, 6-1) to secure the title.

“Our team did a lot of things today,” the head coach said Lucie Schmidhauser. “But the most important element was the way they competed in every match from the first point to the last. Winning the doubles point was very important today. Lindsey and Phoebe played some really exciting and explosive doubles games to bring us to within one doubles match. Nora and Vivian showed so much resilience in their 7-6 win during which we saved a couple of match points to put us 1-0 up. Phoebe, Addie and Vivian closed out their matches so tightly that we got the win. well in the crucial stages of their singles.”
