Eoin Morgan has ended his illustrious career by announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 36-year-old famously captained England to their first World Cup win in 2019 in one of the most dramatic finals in the sport’s history.
He announced his retirement from international cricket last summer, handing over the captaincy to Jos Buttler. And Morgan has now released a statement on social media to confirm that he has fully retired from cricket, but plans to “remain involved in the game” through commentary and observation work.
“It is with great pride that I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket,” Morgan began. “After much consideration, I believe now is the right time to retire from a game that has given me so much over the years. .
“I have cherished every moment since I moved to England in 2005 and joined Middlesex right through to the end when I played for Paarl Royals in the SA20. Like any sportsman’s career there have been ups and downs but my family and friends have been there for me throughout .
“I want to say a very special thank you to my wife Tara, family and close friends who have supported me unconditionally. I also have to thank all my teammates, coaches, fans and those behind the scenes who not only made me the player I became, but also made me the man I am today.
“Cricket has allowed me to travel the world and meet amazing people, many of whom I have made lifelong friendships with. Playing for franchise teams around the world has given me so many memories that I will cherish forever.
“Since retiring from international cricket, I have been able to spend more time with my loved ones and I look forward to doing so more and more in the future. Having said that, I will no doubt miss the adventure and challenges of professional cricket.
“Even though I am taking time out from my playing career, I will still be involved in the game, working with broadcasters at international and franchise tournaments as a commentator and pundit. I sincerely look forward to what the future holds.”
DON’T GO ANYWHERE
Nasser Hussain named Morgan “England’s greatest ever white-ball captain” following his retirement from international cricket last summer.
Hussain said in June 2022: “He changed the culture of English white-ball cricket, not just at the top but all the way through.
“If you look at where we were at the 2015 World Cup in Australia when we lost to Bangladesh, where we were a few years later and where we are now, the change is remarkable.”
He is the only England captain to score more than four One-Day International centuries and retires as the all-time leading run-scorer in ODI cricket with 6,957.
