Prohorenkovs was chosen as the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

WINTHROP, MassThe Atlantic Hockey Association announced it will hand out the weekly awards Monday after two games at No. 18 RIT Niagara. Glebs Prohorenkovs has been chosen as Rookie of the Week.

Prohorenkovs opened the series on Thursday with a three-point game against the Tigers. He recorded an assist on the first goal of the game as the Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Early in the third period, he extended the Purple Eagle lead to two when he scored his first goal of the weekend. With 30 seconds left in the third period, he found a loose puck in front of the net and picked off the goalie to give the Purple Eagles a 4-3 lead with less than 30 seconds left in what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The Riga, Latvia native scored the fourth and final goal on Saturday as he completed a picture perfect pass play to give the Purple Eagles a 4-1 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the third period.

The freshman was also the Purple Eagles’ No. 1 player as he went 30-18 in the starting circle. This season, he has won 57.7% of his starts, the best on the team for a player with 200 or more starts.

In his first season with the Purple and White, he has 10 goals and four assists in 25 games, but also has a team-best +9.

Niagara is back in action this week as they battle for home ice in the Atlantic Hockey playoffs. The Purple Eagles will travel to Holy Cross for a pair of games on Thursday and Friday.
