More on the firing of Michigan football QB coach Matt Weiss

It was a big but incredibly vague story that led to the departure of a member of the Michigan football field staff last month.

Just as things seemed to calm down in Ann Arbor during a tumultuous January, it was revealed that quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss was under arrest pending investigation into alleged computer crimes. The only thing about it – that itself is a vague term.

It didn’t even last a week and Weiss was terminated for cause, which we now learn was that he failed to show up for a meeting to discuss the investigation with Michigan athletics. According to Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit NewsWeiss’ alleged crimes were improper access to computer accounts, and when he did not defend himself, it was treated as an implied admission of guilt.

Former Michigan offensive coordinator Matt Weiss was fired Jan. 20 after a university investigation found the same day that he appeared to have “improper access to computer accounts,” according to his termination letter.

Weiss was asked to appear at the meeting and informed in a Jan. 19 memo that the investigation involved violations of the University of Michigan’s Standard Practice Guide (SPG), according to documents obtained by The Detroit News on Monday. The memo to Weiss said a summary of relevant evidence was attached but was not included in the documents requested by The News. Weiss did not show up for the Jan. 19 meeting.

While there is still no public information about the accounts he is accused of using and the investigation is ongoing, Michigan has moved forward with the promotion of offensive analyst Kirk Campbell to QB coach.
