UND hockey freshman Ben Strinden continues his family legacy at the University of North Dakota – InForum

“I just think I was meant to be here,” said UND freshman hockey player Ben Strinden. “It’s a dream come true.”

It has been a family affair of the Strinden name at the University of North Dakota. UND hockey freshman Ben Strinden continues the legacy and instills a third generation in the Fighting Hawks community. Ben’s dream of wearing Kelly Green has finally come true for him.

“Growing up, I never thought about NHL teams, anything like that. It was always the University of North Dakota,” said Ben. “I look forward to going to the games every Friday with my family and sitting there. suite here. I’m really blessed to be able to make that dream come true.”

Ben’s first game in a Fighting Hawks jersey, his family and friends were all in the stands wearing jerseys with “Strinden” emblazoned on the back. He said it was a very special moment, but there was an important person missing.

“My grandfather couldn’t watch it play, which is unfortunate of course, but I know he’s enjoying the games in heaven. It’s amazing.”

Ben’s grandfather, Earl Strinden, a North Dakota state legislator, dedicated more than 25 years to the UND community. He served as vice president and CEO of the UND alumni association and foundation. Earl died in October, just days after the Fighting Hawks’ season began.

“He had a little bit of dementia when he was nearing the end of his life, but he sent me voice mail messages every single day congratulating me on committing to the University of North Dakota,” Ben said with a smile. “Obviously it made me smile every day and I still listen to them. He was an amazing man.”

Even when Grandpa isn’t in the stands, Ben keeps his grandfather’s advice close to his heart.

“One of his famous sayings was leave the wood stake higher,” he said. “So in everything you do, try to add something to it, try to get something out of it. He’s taught me a lot.”

I asked, “What kind of mark do you want to make on the university as you grow through this program?”

Ben said, “Just like my grandpa said, I want to leave the woodpile higher than it was when I came here. So I just do the little things, whether it’s being a positive leader or just being good to everyone I deal with here. I just want to leave the woodpile higher in the North at the University of Dakota.”
