Former Auburn defensive back takes over Decatur High football program

Airon Savage, a member of the Auburns 2010 football team, has been named the new head coach at Decatur High.

Savage replaces Jere Adcock, who led the Red Raiders for 27 years.

We are so excited to have Coach Savage as the next head football coach at Decatur High School, Decatur City Schools Superintendent Michael Douglas said in a statement. We look forward to him continuing the long tradition of Red Raider football.

Savage, a native of Albany, Ga., played defensive back on Auburns 2010 BCS title team.

He comes to Decatur after most recently coaching defensive backs at Western Illinois.

Savage also has college coaching experience at Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Georgia State, Northern Iowa, Arkansas Tech and Army.

He also spent time as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech and Auburn.

During his Auburn career, Savage had 116 tackles. He had 37 tackles in the 2010 season for the Tigers.

Adcock won 187 games at Decatur. His last team in 2022 went 9-3 and lost to Gardendale in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

The Red Raiders play in Region 7 along with Hartselle, Muscle Shoals, Cullman, Athens and Columbia.
